The Naturalistic Decision Making Association (NDMA) is excited to announce that the 18th International Conference on Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM 2026) will take place from June 22–26, 2026, at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA.

Since 1989, NDM conferences have been the premier gathering for professionals across sectors such as healthcare, defense, transportation, finance, and emergency response to explore decision-making in complex, real-world environments. NDM 2026 is expected to draw attendees for a week of insightful presentations, collaborative workshops, and networking opportunities. 

📣 Call for Proposals: Now Open

The NDMA invites submissions for papers, posters, and interactive experiences. Submissions should outline topics related to naturalistic decision making, including but not limited to:

  • Decision making under complex constraints, including stress and uncertainty
  • Macrocognition in the workplace
  • Strategies to support rapid decision making and enhance cognitive skills
  • Studies of expert and adaptive performance
  • NDM applications in systems engineering, information visualization and user interfaces design
  • Decision making in automation and explainable artificial intelligence
  • Theories of cognitive performance derived from or tested in naturalistic settings
  • Methods of naturalistic inquiry

  • Call for Submissions: Open NOW
  • Submission Deadline: September 15, 2025
  • Early Bird Registration Opens: September 2025
  • Acceptance Notifications: January 2026

Accepted papers will be considered for inclusion in a Special Issue of the Journal of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making. Additionally, submissions will be automatically considered for the Gary A. Klein Award for best contribution to NDM Theory and the Robert R. Hoffman Award for best contribution to NDM Methodology, each carrying a $500 prize.
