For ShadowBox, 2017 was a year of growth and enterprise. This past year, we hosted a Cognitive Skills Training Workshop in June at the Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) Conference in Bath, England where Gary Klein served as a keynote speaker and also gave a talk on Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA), while Joseph Borders presented on the Critical Decision Audit and Emily Newsome introduced a poster on Cognitive Skills Training for Frontline Social Workers: A Pilot Study. We made meaningful additions to the ShadowBox team, welcoming Danielle Graham, as well as part-timers John Schmitt, Steve Gabbard, and Devorah Klein on staff.
Continuing to make strides in the petrochemical industry, we produced a ShadowBox Training User Manual that helps organizations implement ShadowBox into corporate training platforms. Beyond that, we launched our first “Train the Trainer Workshop” at the Center for Operator Performance (COP) Meeting in Corpus Christi, Texas where Gary, Joseph and John Schmidt showed training leaders how to best facilitate ShadowBox. Our supplementary presentations on Mental Models and the Citgo Low Fidelity Simulation training project led by Gary and Joseph, were also well-received at the COP Meeting.
Checking off another 2017 objective, we filed a patent application for our ShadowBox training software (SB concepts). We also had a very successful use of the software to put on ShadowBox training with the California Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) Commission in Sacramento, CA working to advance expertise in the law enforcement domain. In October, we organized a Cognitive Skills Training Workshop at the 2017 Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) International Annual Meeting in Austen, Texas. At the same conference, Laura Militello chaired The War on Experts panel; Gary Klein was a panel presenter.
Among some of our other 2017 accomplishments, we completed a project with the New York State’s Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) training division to improve the sense-making and decision-making skills of junior patrol officers. John Schmitt developed six challenging training scenarios for DCJS as well as scenario guides to be used by future trainers eager to build cognitive skills in their trainees.
Gary gave multiple talks ranging from the What It Takes to Transfer Expertise, to workshops on Anticipatory Thinking at various locations including the Navy War College, North Carolina State University and the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO) in Singapore. Our team has collectively had over a dozen articles published this year.
At the start of 2017, the ShadowBox team set out to accomplish a number of highly ambitious goals and we’re grateful that it’s been one of our most successful years yet. Heading into 2018, we’re working on several exciting projects. We’re maintaining momentum within the child welfare and helicopter rescue domains, we’ll begin collecting data for one of our petrochemical projects using a low fidelity simulator in the upcoming weeks, and we’re working in new areas like artificial intelligence and civil defense technology.
