Cognitive Skills Training with New York State's DCJS Complete
New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services
We recently completed a project with the training division of New York State’s Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) to improve the sense-making and decision-making skills of junior patrol officers. Working with a panel of experienced tactical officers selected by DCJS, our John Schmitt developed six challenging training scenarios and accompanying scenario guides to be used by trainers leading cognitive skills training seminars. The objective of the project is to accelerate the gaining of expertise through the use of scenarios designed specifically to exercise cognitive skills and also to train trainers in effective facilitation techniques. DCJS will introduce the new training program in basic training academies throughout the state.
