Gary, Corinne, and Emily recently returned from a very informative meeting with our colleagues at the Annie E. Casey Foundation (AECF) in Baltimore, MD. ShadowBox has been working with the Casey Foundation as part of the On the Frontline initiative since Spring 2014. Representatives from the three sites involved in the project (Cuyahoga Cty, OH; Allegheny Cty, PA; Jefferson Cty, CO) shared their progress toward their goals in three target areas: Improving the workforce, improving worker decision-making, and improving system decision-making.

We were very excited to share our progress to-date and to gather feedback about next...

Gary, Joey, and myself returned home yesterday from two days of meetings with the Center for Operator Performance (COP) in Houston, TX. Several participating agencies were in attendance, including Beville Engineering, Chevron, Chevron Phillips, Flint Hills Resources, and many others. Our team's first presentation on the ShadowBox approach, Phase I and II updates, and a software demo were met by the group with great questions, comments, and support. ShadowBox also led off the second day with updates from our ongoing project with Chevron Phillips, and ideas for a Phase III proposal.

We would like to thank COP and all in...

This past March, Gary traveled to the UK for several speaking engagements. One of them was the Command and Control (C2) Symposium at Tidworth Garrison Theatre, hosted by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). This symposium was based around 4 themes: C2 concepts, cognition, automation and information.

The video of Gary's talk for the C2 Symposium is now available on YouTube for public viewing.

Emily Newsome and Noel Polander recently returned from their trip to Site #3, Jefferson County in Colorado, where they tested some of their newest ShadowBox scenarios with frontline child protective services workers. These scenarios are part of a larger initiative with the Annie E. Casey Foundation (AECF), On The Frontline, which is a multi-year effort focused on developing innovative approaches for CPS investigations.

The hospitality we received in JeffCo was overwhelming, and once again we were happy to get such thoughtful feedback on the scenarios from all of our participants. We'd like to extend our grat...

Emily Newsome and Noel Polander recently returned from back-to-back trips in Alleghany County, Pennsylvania, and Cuyahoga County, Ohio, where they tested some of their newest ShadowBox scenarios with frontline child protective services (CPS) workers. These scenarios are part of a larger initiative with the Annie E. Casey Foundation (AECF), On The Frontline, which is a multi-year effort focused on developing innovative approaches for CPS investigations.

We were happy to see that the scenarios generated enthusiasm and productive discussions about how to improve training for CPS worker decision-making. The ShadowBox team would lik...

Yesterday, Joseph Borders spoke about the importance of developing cognitive skills at 2015 American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) Workforce Training and Development Forum. The session, titled “Man vs. Machine,” explored various ways to capture and transfer tacit knowledge using simulation and other low-fidelity methods (e.g., tabletop exercises). The Center for Operator Performance (COP) and ShadowBox LLC are currently addressing these challenges with Chevron Phillips Chemical in Houston, Texas.

Gary, Joseph, and I made a trip to the Chevron Phillips Chemical Pasadena, Texas plant this week to learn more about what it really takes to be an expert in the petrochemical domain. During the trip, our team conducted several Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA) interviews to uncover the cognitive challenges of a board operator. We also had the great opportunity to take a tour of the plant - which brought everything that we'd been hearing about to life.

Not surprisingly, there is a lot involved in managing such a complex process and keeping everyone at the plant safe. We plan to use what we gathered over the past four days to inf...

ShadowBox teamed with California POST again last week to take part in the annual Urban Shield event hosted in the Bay Area. Emergency response teams (SWAT, Fire, EOD, EMS) from northern California and across the United States participated in the continuous 48-hour simulation training exercise. Last April, ShadowBox, California POST and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office collaborated to develop two Urban Shield tactical scenarios for rapid response teams. This past week, we had the opportunity to see these scenarios come to life as we observed and interviewed teams about their communication, tactics, and decision-making. These findings wi...

ShadowBox is collaborating with the California commission on Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) to develop training for first responders in the first hour of crisis management. Gary Klein and the ShadowBox team recently visited the POST Headquarters in Sacramento, California to conduct Cognitive Task Analysis interviews with experienced police officers and observe live-action simulation exercises. Using this data, ShadowBox will identify cognitive skills and strategies that effective first responders use to manage critical incidents, and outline the barriers that cause novices to struggle.
