Gary, Joey, and myself returned home yesterday from two days of meetings with the Center for Operator Performance (COP) in Houston, TX. Several participating agencies were in attendance, including Beville Engineering, Chevron, Chevron Phillips, Flint Hills Resources, and many others. Our team's first presentation on the ShadowBox approach, Phase I and II updates, and a software demo were met by the group with great questions, comments, and support. ShadowBox also led off the second day with updates from our ongoing project with Chevron Phillips, and ideas for a Phase III proposal.
Yesterday, Joseph Borders spoke about the importance of developing cognitive skills at 2015 American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) Workforce Training and Development Forum. The session, titled “Man vs. Machine,” explored various ways to capture and transfer tacit knowledge using simulation and other low-fidelity methods (e.g., tabletop exercises). The Center for Operator Performance (COP) and ShadowBox LLC are currently addressing these challenges with Chevron Phillips Chemical in Houston, Texas.

Gary, Joseph, and I made a trip to the Chevron Phillips Chemical Pasadena, Texas plant this week to learn more about what it really takes to be an expert in the petrochemical domain. During the trip, our team conducted several Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA) interviews to uncover the cognitive challenges of a board operator. We also had the great opportunity to take a tour of the plant - which brought everything that we'd been hearing about to life.
