Gary, Corinne, and Emily recently returned from a very informative meeting with our colleagues at the Annie E. Casey Foundation (AECF) in Baltimore, MD. ShadowBox has been working with the Casey Foundation as part of the On the Frontline initiative since Spring 2014. Representatives from the three sites involved in the project (Cuyahoga Cty, OH; Allegheny Cty, PA; Jefferson Cty, CO) shared their progress toward their goals in three target areas: Improving the workforce, improving worker decision-making, and improving system decision-making.

Dr. Gary Klein, Dr. Corinne Wright, and Emily Newsome will be attending the Human Factors and Ergonomic Society (HFES) Annual Meeting this week, hosted in Los Angeles, CA.
ShadowBox activities are all happening on Tuesday, Oct. 26 - Gary will be speaking on a discussion panel about Macrocognitive Perspectives in Intelligence Analysis, and Emily Newsome will be presenting her poster on our recent work with Frontline Social Workers. We hope to see you there.

Yesterday, Joseph Borders spoke about the importance of developing cognitive skills at 2015 American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) Workforce Training and Development Forum. The session, titled “Man vs. Machine,” explored various ways to capture and transfer tacit knowledge using simulation and other low-fidelity methods (e.g., tabletop exercises). The Center for Operator Performance (COP) and ShadowBox LLC are currently addressing these challenges with Chevron Phillips Chemical in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Gary Klein received quite the surprise tonight when colleague and friend, Brian Moon, called him up to the front of NDM's banquet dinner for a "roast." Fond memories, old photos, and admirations were shared by Gary's colleagues and mentees - Laura Militello, Rob Hutton, Dr. Judith Orasanu, Dr. Cindy Dominguez, and Dr. Robert Hoffman.
Celebrating over 25 years of Gary's involvement in the Naturalistic Decision Making community, and hopefully many more to come!

We're looking forward to sharing our findings on the effectiveness of the ShadowBox training tool for improving petrochemical panel operator decision-making.
The ShadowBox team will be presenting a poster at the 2015 Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, CA this October. This poster will highlight some of the findings from our collaboration with the Annie E. Casey Foundation, where we used ShadowBox to learn more about the mindsets of expert social workers.
The ShadowBox team will be giving a talk at the 2015 Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics International Conference in Las Vegas, NV this July. This talk will highlight some of the ways that ShadowBox sets itself apart from other training tools.
